History of Hobart Racecourse

The Hobart Race track is operated by the Tasmanian Racing Club, and is located in the suburb known as Glenorchy within Tasmania.  The track is named Tattersall’s Park due to its sponsorship deal.  It doesn’t host any Group 1 or Group 2 race meetings; it features only Group 3 racing currently.  The Hobart race track has a total circumference of 1,990 meters, and there is a slight climb in the track on its way to the home turn, and that leads into a straight of 350 meters.  The track is run in an anti clockwise direction.  The track is also known as Elwick racecourse.  It is surrounded by Mount Wellington and the Derwent River, and has been racing hold races since the 1880’s, when it was a premier track for thoroughbred horses.  The Hobart Race track holds an astonishing 110 race meets a year.

There are two other major racecourses in Tasmania other than the Hobart track, and those are the Launceston Racecourse and Devonport Racecourse.  The Hobart Cup race meet is without a doubt the biggest Tasmanian race day at Tattersall’s Park and is 3yo handicap and has a prize pool of $400,000 and features the best local horses and some better national horses have been known to enter the race as well.  The track is home to the Tasmanian Guineas and Tasmanian Derby, which is an open set weights race that spans 2,200 meters and has a prize pool of $200,000.  The Tasmanian Summer Carnival is the best event featured in the Apple Isle, with $3 million given away in prize money every year to lure the Eastern raiders to the wonderful Tasmanian racetracks.

Some of the other races that are held in the summer carnival starting in February are the Elwick Stakes, which has a prize pool of $80,000 and is a 2 year old open set weights race held over 1,100 meters.  The Bow Mistress Stakes is a listed fillies and mares WFA race that has a $120,000 prize pool and is ran over 1,200 meters.  The Strutt Stakes is a listed 3 year old fillies set weights race that has a prize pool of $80,000 and is ran over 2,100 meters.  Then there’s the Thomas Lyon Stakes, a weight for age race, and has an $80,000 prize pool and is ran over 1,400 meters.
