Morphettville Race Track – History and Racing Tips Article

In Adelaide, the most popular venue for horse racing is the Morphettville Racecourse. The Morphettville Racecourse is considered the premier location for horse racing in South Australia and home to the South Australian Jockey Club. The course is located off Anzac Highway in Morphett Road, Morphettville, just a couple of kilometers away from the Adelaide City centre. The Morphettville Race Track is also widely known as the “Allan Scott Park” because of the sponsorship provided by Allan Scott, the well-known Mount Gambier transport company tycoon.

The first race meeting was held in Morphettville in 1875. The track was first redeveloped in year 2002 and was then said to be the best course in the southern hemisphere. Some of the popular horseracing events held in the Morphettville Race Track are the Australasian Oaks, the South Australian Derby and the SA Fillies Classic, also known to people as the South Australian Oaks. These events easily attract those who are into horserace betting in addition to the popular jockeys, horses and trainers that already immensely populate the place. Other major events held at the Morphettville Racecourse include the Goodwood Handicap, Adelaide Cup and the Robert Sangster Stakes.

The Morphettville Course has two racetracks namely the Morphettville Parks Track and the Allan Scott Park Morphettville Track. The new Parks track has a total circumference of 2,339 meters with a counter clockwise direction but with a straight length of 334 meters. It features a long straights run down the back, allowing the horses to race over 1,400 meters, which the original course did not. It also features inside barriers, which can be a good advantage when it comes to sprint races. On the other hand, the original circumference of the Allan Scott Park Morphettville track is 2,307 meters or 340 meters when measured straight. The fair open racecourse gives an even chance of winning to all horses as it allows them to race on a pace or prefer to come from behind.

The races at Morphettville Race Track are supervised and ran by the South Australian Jockey Club. Last year, a new inner track was introduced at Morphettville in replacement of the tracks at Victoria Park and Cheltenham. Another widely known group is the Morphettville Race Club. The club conducts roughly 35 racing meetings annually.
