Melbourne Cup Betting Strategy

melbourne cup

It's that time again!!

Well it has come around again, the race that stops a nation, the Melbourne Cup - Race 7 at Flemington.

We all know how difficult it can be to pick the winners of the Melbourne Cup, with horses  and jockeys from all over the world competing in the event, that is why we take a fairly broad strategy when it comes to picking the winners for the cup.

Over the past 3 years all the placings have had win odds under $58, and therefore you can use this as a starting point for your analysis.

Our recommendation for the Melbourne Cup is to select the top 14 runners, typically with odds under $58 and box them for a Trifecta or First Four Dividend.  This will cost you $21.90 for a Trifecta and you will receive 1% of the payout, and $241 for 1% of the First Four Dividend (Remember the First Four dividend in 2012 was over $1,000,000).  Now this may seem like a small payout but do not focus on the 1%, you need to focus on the size of the payouts for the Melbourne Cup, consider this, the Trifecta for the past 3 years has been $3,241.50, $48,545.70 and $3,625, that would have returned you $554 for a total Investment of $67.70, this equates to a total return of 843%, which is a very hefty Return on Investment.

For a small $21.90 Investment you have a much greater chance of winning and you will enjoy the race much more than if you simply back the favourite for a win/place.
